Kili – to Uhuru Peak (5895m)

After a hearty dinner last night, the group would have shuffled off into the darkness to begin their hike up a steep path of scree and seasonal snow for about 7kms which will take approximately 8-10hrs.  At Stella Point on the crater rim (5,685 m) they will stop for a short rest before the remaining hike along the rim to Uhuru Peak […]

Kilimanjaro – Rest

The team are already ensconsed at the Aishi hotel. Because Nicola and Nadine were feeling so strong, they descended in one day. All now feeling great and relishing the oxygen rich air, and today will be spent resting by the pool, reflecting on the climb and later – a trip into town for dinner and summit celebrations! Well […]

Kilimanjaro – Summit

News in from Sean – they reached Uhuru Peak about an hour ago (6.30am), which is one of his earliest summits.  Nicola and Nadine are really fit and strong.  Sean’s now on the crater rim taking photos of the glaciers…

Sean sms’d me at 11pm last night saying ‘well on our way’.  No news yet but if the weather has been good to them and Nicola and Nadine are strong, the summit should be in site. Holding thumbs!

Kilimanjaro – Day 5

Heard from Sean – they are on their way to Barafu campsite at 4600m – and firing as strong as Khumjung yaks!  They should arrive in an hour or so.  Then it will be serious preparation time as they sleep, eat and hydrate – getting ready for  tonight’s departure for the summit.  If all goes well, the team will arrive at […]

Kilimanjaro – Day 4

Barranco wall

We’ve just arrived at Karanga camp at 3930m.  Barranco wall was a piece of cake!  We’ll be spending the afternoon resting for our move to the upper mountain tomorrow – Barafu camp at 4600m.  Everyone is in good shape. I got wipped at Seven’s card game last night.  Must come back tonight or […]

Kilimanjaro – Day 3

Lava Tower

Great day!  It’s been misty but we managed to get a glimpse of Lava Tower as it peeped out of the mist for a second after lunch. Nadine and Nicola are going strong. Every day a better one they say – we’re having lots of laughs.

It’s still very dry but I must be grateful.  Hoping […]

Kilimanjaro – Day 2

Machame to Shira

All good so far.  We arrived at Shira for lunch.  Nicola had a bit of a headache but she’s doing ok.

There’s a new helicopter pad here from Russian billionaire and Chelsea Football club owner Roman Abramovich. Abramovich and his party of 6 needed 113 porters to look after their every need but […]

Kilimanjaro – Day 1

I left rainy Durbs yesterday and met Nicola Rowbotham at OR Tambo airport and then onto Kili with a short stop-over in Nairobi.  Nicola has been on a training and nutritional program for the last 6 months and will be writing a story of the climb for Shape magazine. As we were about to land […]

Mt Kilimanjaro – 10th climb

We’ve just got back from Hwandile in the Transkei where we spent a lovely couple of days at the Haines’ cottage with unbelievable views of the Wild Coast – thanks to Fee & Ant, and Glynne & Hazel.  Fishing was great, having caught a 3kg Rock Salmon, 2 Sand Sharks and a Silver Bream.

For the last […]
