Mt Elbrus – summit day report

It snowed, it froze over, we were pinned in our tents.  The weather forecast was set to improve but it’s never accurate on big ‘hills’.  Of course the sun has to shine eventually.  When I woke up at 1am on Monday we were still in ‘Fogville’.  It was miserable.  Big mountains generate their own weather, […]

Mt Elbrus – summit – 5694 m

‘We made it!  A full house summited at 12 pm today.  Well done to everyone especially the boys’.

The team are all safely back at the Povorot hotel in Terskol.  Many thanks to Dirk for organising the snow plough which got everyone off the mountain at speed, after a successful summit in trying conditions.

Tomorrow will be spent […]

Mt Elbrus – day 7

From Sean – ‘Since last night we’ve been hunkered down, with heavy snowfall crackling on the roofs of our tents.  Mini moguls (features on ski slopes) on the mountain side. Happily tucked into our -15 sleeping bags’.

Mt Elbrus – day 6

From Sean – ‘ today we went up to Pastukhov Rocks (4700 m).  We’ve descended and are camped at 4300 m. Weather isn’t great – white out right now and snow showers forecast for the next few days.  In our tents and busy cooking 20 minute noodles’.

Mt Elbrus – day 4

Message from Sean is that everyone is well and that today’s acclimatisation hike was a good slog up to 3150m – in denims.  Instead of doing the usual route to Cheget, they went to the Observation station and had fantastic views of Mt Elbrus.  The weather was beautiful.  But the best news of all is that […]

Mt Elbrus – day 3

The group flew from Moscow to Mineralnye Vody (Mineral Water) this morning and then drove for 3 hours to Terskol.  Tony, Sean and Dido are frustratingly still without their gear bags.  We are all hoping that the bags arrive in Terskol tomorrow during their acclimatisation hike up the ski lift, and along Cheget ridge to about 3400m.  Brand new silver studded […]

Mt Elbrus – day 2

Sean, Dido and Tony arrived in Moscow – all fine but without their gear bags!  Tomorrow they leave for Terskol so let’s hope Etihad airways moves mountains to get the missing bags delivered before Thursday.

The group at Red Square
