Mt Elbrus – Day 4 – Acclimatisation day

Written By: sean on August 11, 2010 One Comment

Message received last night from Sean ‘We’re in Terskol and going well.  It’s raining!  Had the best Shasklik beef kebab ever for lunch’.  The mountain rule of eat, eat, eat would have no doubt been enforced by the waitress – don’t cross a Russian waitress by not finishing your food.

Today is an acclimatisation day and the plan after breakfast is to hike to Cheget Glade at 2100m and then ascend by the Cheget cablecar to the upper station at 3050m.  They will either take a ski lift to a levelled platform on the ice; or  hike up along the ridge or to the top of Mt Cheget at 3410m.  Sean mentioned that today the group will practice their climbing skills such as learning how to self arrest.  Self arrest is a  manoeuvre whereby a climber who has fallen and is sliding down a snow or ice slope arrests (stops) the slide by digging his/her ice axe into the ground. Hopefully no-one will need to self arrest on this trip.

Later, the group will return to the village and spend the night at the hotel.
