South Pole – Day 4

Email from Sean ‘We’ve been given the nod to have our bags readied and will be collected this afternoon by ALE (Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions). Tomorrow we are on standby for a potential fly in.

The briefing was packed with loads of interesting points that we need to observe such as bio sensitive issues like not taking seeds, soil or anything that will contaminate the environment into Antarctica. We will be treated like regular livestock; our feet dipped in a footbath before we board the plane. Frostbite was pretty high on the cautionary list and the issue of altitude was highlighted when we fly from Union Glacier into the last degree which starts at about 3300m. All poo must be removed from the frozen continent so we will be hauling a bag of frosty turds with us wherever we go!

We’ll fly with our polar gear on as the temperature will be approximately -15 C below when we get out the plane. I remember the shock wave when the cold hits you as you take those tentative first steps on the blue ice runway. The icy dryness of the fresh air thumps your lungs. It takes a few hours to become conditioned to the temperature and adapt to the way things work. For example, not to touch any steel with bare fingers and to be careful how you walk on the ice so as to prevent seeing your botty!

So there’s lots of excitement right now and loads to look forward to. If we leave tomorrow, my next chat will be from Antarctica’.
