South Pole – Day 6

Latest from Sean is that they’ve just completed another briefing on issues such as how to survive in the Antarctic,  how to regulate body temperature, what to wear, ski techniques,  how to protect their shelters from damage and safety procedures for dealing with emergency situations etc.  It’s all pretty serious stuff.  Sean said they will take a crash course in skiing today – literally.

There are 54 people in the campsite at Union Glacier and they’ve named the expedition Sean is on as ‘Ski the Last Degree Luxury Expedition’.  They even get mattresses in their tents.

The plan tomorrow is to fly to 89 degrees south – weather permitting.  They may stop along the way at the Theils Mountains at a re-fueling cache where they will put more fuel on board before continuing towards their destination. The main issue is acclimatisation because at the moment they are at about 1000 meters above sea level.  When they land they will be at approximately 3000 meters above sea level which means a ‘sudden big hit’ in altitude, and maybe a few headaches as it will take some time for the crew to adjust to the thinner air. From this point they will ski the last degree to the South Pole, which will take about eight days.
