South Pole – Day 18 – They’ve arrived

They’ve arrived at the South Pole!  Everyone is in great spirits and we are super stoked said Sean.  ‘It’s brilliant to be here’.

Yesterday was an epic of a day as they battled the wind for over 9 hours.  ‘It was war’. But the intrepid team pushed on and eventually arrived at their final destination.  They reached the camp which is at the end of the runway/skiway and then walked about 1km to the ceremonial Pole where they spent time taking pics, congratulating team members and celebrating. They then went on a tour of the Amundsen-Scott Base which was fascinating said Sean.  There are about 250 people at the base but you never see them!  The wind is howling and is probably blowing at about 40-45 km/ph.  The ambient temperature is minus 33 C below – with the wind chill it’s about minus 50 C below.

The plan to fly out doesn’t look good. The forecast says that the weather will start deteriorating from tomorrow which means they’ll have to hunker down for a few days until it clears enough for the plane to fly in and collect them.  There may be a small chance that the plane flies in early tomorrow before the weather moves in…
