Sean Wisedale – Mt Everest Expedition 2015 – BC avalanche – Plans not certain

Written By: sean on April 28, 2015 17 Comments

Historically we know that after great earthquakes things tend to settle down even after the aftershocks and this is what we are relying on right now.  We are quite uncertain about our future because decisions can’t be made immediately.

Climbing is an analogy for life.  We constantly face adversity.  Overcoming challenges and celebrating success gives us a reason to climb and to live.  Right now we are safe.  We believe that the seismicity of the region has stabilized.  We have little more to offer to assist the dead and injured, most of whom have been evacuated from Base Camp.

From left to right: Nico, Molly (Marlette), Minki (Wilmien), Sean and Rob

My team – Rob, Molly, Minki and Nico have been unbelievable during this crises – altruistic in every way.  When the injured needed to be hauled into a makeshift medical tent – Rob was there. I am very fortunate to be in the company of people I would go to war with.

We are currently out of base camp reflecting on what we have just survived.  Our plans are not certain.  Best Sean.

Good luck to you all. Thanks for the updates. The visuals of the destruction in towns effected in the area is unbeleivable. Its as if an atomic bomb has gone off. The casualty numbers in vilages are rising daily and international aid is being sent in from all over and on a war footing. We wish you guys best of luck and make the experience a safe one. Gods speed boet. I hope it turns for the best. Phil.

Thank the Lord you are all safe ……

Please just all come home safely !

It wouldn’t be wise to continue the expedition at this point. From what I have read, many of the larger expeditions have decided to make a strategic retreat from the mountain, not willing to put anyone at risk to establish a route through the icefall, instead allowing Sherpas to return home to assess damage in their own communities. I have also heard that many climbers are very concerned that they be completely self sufficient as they make their way back to the city not wanting to tax the already unstable (in more ways than one) infrastructure. I applaud those unselfish actions. I hope you follow their lead and maybe lend your hand (and/or gear etc) to helping the citizens of Nepal.

    Response to Jenny
Hi Jenny. Thanks for your input. Just to let you know that Sean and his team have been incredibly selfless so far by working tirelessly to help those injured and donating their supplies and medical supplies to the injured climbers, sherpas, and staff at Base Camp. They have so far lent more than their hands and knowing them well, will be the first to help those who need it.
    Regards
    Katherine Wisedale

Spot on Kath I’ve been in a rather testy situation where people didn’t make it back and saw Wisey operating, selflessly and bravely helping total strangers who we are likely never to see again. He has the experience and leadership which this situation calls for.
Wish him, Nico and the others well from your many SA friends and fellows.
    Mike

I’m absolutely sure they will do all they can, that’s great to hear. I wish them all good luck as they recover from what must be such sadness all around.

P.S. Perhaps I just read the blog post incorrectly and assumed that climbing was still an option so I am so sorry if I assumed anything incorrectly! I know how tough this must be for everyone involved.

Hi again, I do echo what Peter said earlier – I think that if Sean and the team can continue with their summit attempt then they should continue, it would be so amazing if there could be some positivity and good news at the back of this tragedy and sadness.

I think Sean and the team are heroes for what they have done for the dying and injured and are no doubt still very traumatised.

I really do wish them well with whatever they decide to do – only they will know when the time comes to make that decision we can only support them!
