Ac – A successful summit
E-mail received from Sean at Base Camp: We got up to Nido in 6 hours on the 12th after a heavy night of wind at BC… At BC many tents were lost during the night and I was fearful of arbitrary flying missiles (solar panels, barrels etc.) that could be heard crashing around us. Many unoccupied tents were blown away and the next morning at least 6 were flattened, poles broken and their occupants high up, unaware of the mayhem. At Nido we were shocked – of our three pitched tents two had vanished…not a single line or pole remained…not a trace… An almost disastrous situation was turned around because the one tent holding all the food fuel, ice axes, crampons and high altitude gear was still standing…it was pitched at just the right angle to the wind and tucked behind a natural buffer of rock and ice that had deflected the blast. The Aconcagua Park rangers were surveying the damage up high and trying to aid climbers who were hammered and lent us a tent for the night. I radioed BC and a tent was sent up the next morning which we took up to Berlin.
The summit push followed the next morning. No-one got any sleep before the summit push as we inherited a Norwegian snorer who had been moved away from his group for that reason. He sounded like a calf seeking its mothers udders and was unrelenting. A good thing really because I thought it was twenty past 4 and woke everyone. It was actually 10 past 2. We had perfect weather and summited at 2.15 in snow. Back in BC and will continue with the rest of the story tomorrow. Everyone well, exhausted, exhilarated and dying to get back to Mendoza.
Record ascent of Ac this season.
