Everest

Received from Sean yesterday evening: We trekked up to Thengboche monastery today from Khumjung. What a day.
Yesterday we had amazing views of Everest and Lhotse in the early morning but today it was a huff and a puff. Buddha only knows how the porters manage to carry 20 sheets of corrigated iron and another porter was carrying about 100 kg’s of timber. The day before yesterday we met a porter who was carrying 120KG…fact!

Up ahead of the crew today were Michelle (Rawlinson direct route) and Marthinus, Kelly and Nicci. Goose, Nancy, Snackpot and Steve took it easy and we all made it in 4.5 hours which is actually pretty fast, although we want to be slow. We were actually plodding steadily until an American came past on a horse. Yesterday Snackpot told the Americans to take a picture with me in it because I have been up Everest. Snackpot wears size 42 and 44 Soviet Jeans. Snackpot has also bumped his forehead on the top of every door frame since Lukla. So the Americans took the picture but I don’t think they believed me.

I am getting on well with Nicci because she and her husband Paul also row canoes. She was telling me about how they paddle on the ‘not so tidal’  Thames and met a youngster who was trying to paddle the entire length of the Thames unassisted with a can of live crabs between his legs. He shot a goose to eat as well. Lucky Goose didn’t hear that story because she doesn’t like animals being hurt.
