Kili – Day 5 – to Barafu Hut (4600m)

Written By: sean on May 19, 2010 2 Comments

“Beautiful sunrise this morning – view over the clouds. Mt Meru in the west.  We had a great sleep and everyone is amped for the summit push tonight!”

Text from Sean last night “Wildest sunset – clear and stable. It’s going to be a very fresh night. Stars galore. There are only 3 other tents at Karanga. Putu and boerie for dins”

After a hearty breakfast this morning, the group will take a slow trek through the wild alpine desert to Barafu hut (approx 3 to 4 hours). After lunch they will try to get some rest before dinner. This is when they need to eat and drink as much as possible to increase their energy stores for tonight’s summit bid.  They’ll depart at around 11pm for the summit, push through the night and if all goes well, arrive at Uhuru peak (5895m) – the highest point in Africa – at sunrise tomorrow morning.
