South Pole – Day 1
Sean departed early this morning for his JHB flight to Sao Paulo, then onto Santiago and finally to Punta Arenas – a port town on the edge of the Magellan Straits in southern Chile. On Wednesday Sean will meet all the others on the team as they fly in from various parts of the world.
More about the expedition…From Punta Arenas, the group will fly in a Russian Ilyushin 76 aircraft onto the Antarctic continent to a remote inland camp called Union Glacier. Here the team will finalise arrangements before catching another flight in a Twin Otter Turboprop into the vast white interior of the continent where they will begin their ten day ski trek at 89 degrees South. They will ski about 8 hours a day while towing a sled with group equipment and provisions, stopping each night to set up camp. After approximatly 110 kilometers, they will reach the southern most point on earth.
