Rwenzoris – Day 2

Message from Sean is that all is well and on track.  After an early breakfast at Sunset Motel in Entebbe, the group was collected by their driver, Moses and are now on their way to Kasese via Fort Portal for lunch. They’ll pass captivating attractions en route, perhaps have a brief stop at the Equator and be in both hemispheres at once, drive past the roadside markets and continue to the escarpment overlooking the Great Rift Valley.  In Kasese, they’ll visit the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services’ office where the permits and gear hire will be paid for, before retiring to Margherita hotel with the Rwenzori mountains soaring above.

Tomorrow the trek begins:

An ascent of the mountain passes through a series of five different vegetation zones – from farmlands to tropical and bamboo forests up to the alpine zones. The eastern side of the Rwenzoris receives a high rainfall which means luxuriant mountain floral vegetation. The density of the highland jungle and the unique obstacle of bogs present a challenging climb but the rewards are great. Of the three East African mountains, the Rwenzori languish in a kind of half consciousness, aloof from the main stream trekking routes and rarely visited in comparison to its famous cousins Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Kenya.
