Kilimanjaro – Day 3

Lava Tower

Lava Tower

Great day!  It’s been misty but we managed to get a glimpse of Lava Tower as it peeped out of the mist for a second after lunch. Nadine and Nicola are going strong. Every day a better one they say – we’re having lots of laughs.

It’s still very dry but I must be grateful.  Hoping to collect some glacier ice for the Tarkastad Canoe Club AGM  which I will be attending on my way to the Fish River Canoe Marathon in early Oct.  Apparently one of their concerns has been the diversion of water from the Himalayas to the Bottlegat river so that they can stage the Tarka challenge in a river with some water in it!  I’m hoping the glacier ice will help you Allie!

Game of Sevens about to kick off.  It’s cold and misty so we’re huddled and cozy.  Vegetable soup for dinner.  Tomorrow we head up the Barranco wall to Karanga camp at 3930m.

Here’s Nicola’s description of Day 3: Hiked from Shira camp (3800m) up to Lava Tower at 4600m where we had a yummy lunch of boiled eggs, pies, chicken soup and fresh fruit. We then hiked down to Barranco camp at 3950m through scenery that looked like the ‘land before time’.  Our afternoon ritual of maries and milo and great story sharing ensued.  Off to play cards before an early dinner.

Great stuff, guys. Boy, do your reports bring back memories! Sounds as if the weather is worse than it was last year in March. Have to say, though, one Kili summit was enough for me. Trying something different each time I get inspired to do something crazy (you know my family thinks I’m mad).

Love reading your feeds – feels as if I’m climbing along! Can’t wait to go back there next year for my second climb of Kili! (First one was with Sean Disney!) Take only one step at a time and breath slowly (summit night!)
I’ve got a great collection of books from Freeze Frame to the eveset diary – thanks for the trouble to blog each day! Be blessed with a awesome trip and safe return!
