Mt Kilimanjaro – Day 4

Written By: sean on September 25, 2013 2 Comments

Today’s climb was shorter than the previous days. This is where the Umbwe route joins the other routes – such as the popular and often crowded Machame route.  The main obstacle was the near vertical Barranco Wall.  It looks more imposing that it is.  A path zigzags up to the top and while both hands are used to ascend, it’s a scramble, not a rock climb. It would have taken the climbers about  1 ½ hrs to reach the top – the highest point of the day (4233m).  From the top it’s about 1 hours walk over gently sloped hills and through valleys to the spectacular Karanga camp (4040m)

From Sean early today  ‘Nearly at the top of the wall.  Wind blowing a hoolie.   Everyone in good shape’.

Later on ‘ We’ve arrived at Karanga.  All well.  Chicken, chips and salad for lunch.  Smiles all around’.

This evening  ‘Cold and cloudy.  Great nap this afternoon.  Everyone in great spirits – excited to head up tomorrow.  Kili popped its head through the cloud this afternoon.  Spectacular’.
