EBC – Gorak Shep to Base Camp (5300m)
Today is the day! Everyone will be feeling the affects of the sub zero temperatures and thin air but will feel exhilarated to finally reach the base of Chomolungma – Mother Goddess of the World as Mt Everest is known to Tibetan Buddhists. At this level, there is only 50% of the oxygen at sea level. It will be like functioning on one lung. The attractive 7000m peak of Pumori will dwarf their trek to BC. In the first hour of hiking, all they see (besides the towering peaks on either side) is a sign which says they’re on their way to Base Camp. The group may hear the cracking of the moving glacier and the roar of avalanches thundering down the surrounding high peaks. Then the moment arrives and suddenly Everest opens up and tiny mutli-coloured dots representing Base Camp tents appear. All the peaks – Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Changtse, AmaDablam can be seen from this vantage point.
Once they reach Base Camp, the crew will hopefully get to enjoy the most delicious and most expensive hot apple pie in the world at the Everest Bakery. And for those who are feeling energetic enough, Sean will take a walk through the camp, which includes standing at the edge of the notorious Khumbu Icefall, passing by the campsites of expeditions from all over the world who are attempting to summit and perhaps meeting the Ice fall doctors – the unsung heroes of Mt Everest.
It’s an experience of a life-time to be there and very moving…
