Sms just received ‘We are in Punta Arenas – it’s very windy.  We are waiting for the others to arrive.  The weather is marginal for the passage to Antarctica’.

Sean departed early this morning for his JHB flight to Sao Paulo, then onto Santiago and finally to Punta Arenas – a port town on the edge of the Magellan Straits in southern Chile.  On Wednesday Sean will meet all the others on the team as they fly in from various parts of the world.

South Pole – 1 day to go

It’s the usual last minute scramble to get everything done before Sean leaves tomorrow for the Zahid South Pole expedition.  Sean is super excited – he’s been longing to return to Antarctica since summiting Mt Vinson in 1998 on the first South African expedition.  Sean is the videographer and photographer on the team.

‘We’ve arrived at Barafu.  Everyone is well.  The weather is looking sweet – a bit windy and will be clear and cold tonight with full moon.  We depart at 11pm tonight for the summit bid’.

 Just received from Sean ‘Lovely day tapping up. Everyone is strong.  There are great views of the peak and Barafu is in sight. The well acclimatised porters are flying past us’.
